From the Capital
Rabat, Morocco's capital, sits on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river. Like Casablanca, it is not itself a mountain hiking destination, but its position on the high-speed Al Boraq rail line makes it an excellent launch point for weekend Atlas trips via Marrakech and for easy coastal walking along the Atlantic. The capital's own forests and the nearby Mamora cork oak forest offer gentle half-day walks.
The realistic hiking from Rabat is a 2–3 day weekend trip to Marrakech and the High Atlas: take the Al Boraq high-speed train to Kenitra/Casablanca and connect to Marrakech, then a day hike to Imlil or Ourika, or a 2-day Toubkal summit. For a same-day outing, the Atlantic coast around Rabat, Skhirat and Oualidia offers easy cliff and beach walks, and the Mamora forest north of the city has shaded cork-oak trails.
Marrakech Outdoor Hikes runs its core departures from Marrakech. This guide maps hiking from Rabat so Rabat-based travellers can plan the onward journey, and we can design private itineraries starting with a Marrakech transfer.
The classic Rabat hiking weekend: Day 1 take the train to Marrakech (via Casablanca, ~3h30 total on the Al Boraq + connection). Day 2 a guided day hike to Imlil & Berber villages or the Ourika Valley. Day 3 a second hike or return to Rabat.
For a longer weekend, add a 2-day Mount Toubkal summit (Days 2–3) — a genuine 4,000 m achievement reachable from Rabat in a long weekend.
The Bou Regreg estuary and the Salé coastline offer easy coastal walking right at the capital. Skhirat, 30 km south, has Atlantic cliff paths and a famous surf break. Oualidia, 2.5 hours south, is a beautiful lagoon with cliff walks.
The Mamora forest, north of Rabat toward Kenitra, is one of the largest cork-oak forests in the world — flat, shaded and ideal for an easy half-day walk, especially in spring when wildflowers carpet the floor.
