Essaouira and the Atlantic Headlands
Essaouira is Morocco's coastal hiking capital — a fortified Portuguese port with a windy medina, fresh seafood and a mild climate. The coastal path south from Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki (18 km, 4–5 hours) follows Atlantic cliffs, argan groves and wild beaches, and is the classic coastal day walk. North of town, the Diabat dunes and the ruined Borj el-Berod make a shorter, easier loop.
The argan forest around Essaouira is unique to southwestern Morocco — a UNESCO-protected biosphere where goats climb the trees to eat the fruit. Walking through it is gentle, shaded and culturally rich, with argan-oil cooperatives to visit along the way.
Souss-Massa National Park
South of Agadir, Souss-Massa National Park protects a 70 km stretch of estuary, dunes and cliffs between the Souss and Massa rivers. It is one of Morocco's most important bird reserves — over 270 species, including the rare Northern Bald Ibis. Walking trails follow the cliff tops and the riverbanks; the park is flat and easy, ideal for wildlife lovers.

The Mediterranean Coast (Oued Laou)

Summer is windy and busy with windsurfers but pleasant for walking. Winter is mild (15–20 °C) and the quietest season; Essaouira is famously windy year-round so pack a windbreaker.
Getting to the Coast
Essaouira is 175 km (2.5 hours) from Marrakech by road, with regular buses and private transfers. Agadir has an international airport and is 3 hours from Marrakech. Souss-Massa is 60 km south of Agadir. The Mediterranean coast around Oued Laou is reached from Tangier or Tetouan (2–3 hours).
