Multi-Day Trekking Across Morocco

Morocco trekking tours with Marrakech Outdoor Hikes are multi-day, all-inclusive expeditions led by licensed Berber mountain guides. From the 2-day Mount Toubkal summit to the 6-day Mgoun wilderness traverse, every trek includes a certified guide, mule support for group equipment, all accommodation in refuges, guesthouses or camps, and all meals — you carry only a light daypack.

Morocco is one of the world's great trekking destinations because the variety is extraordinary within a compact country: the High Atlas holds North Africa's highest peak (Toubkal, 4,167 m) and the remote Mgoun massif (4,071 m); the Jebel Siroua is a saffron-scented volcano; the Jebel Saghro is a wild winter plateau where the mountains dissolve into the Sahara; and the Erg Chigaga dunes offer genuine deep-desert camel trekking.

Every Morocco trekking tour starts with private transfer from Marrakech and is paced for acclimatisation on high routes. Groups are small (typically 6–10 on shared departures) and every itinerary can be run privately on your own dates and adapted to your fitness and interests.

Mount Toubkal Trekking Tours

Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) is North Africa's highest peak and the most popular trekking tour in Morocco. The 2-day Toubkal trek is the shortest honest route to a 4,000 m summit — overnight at the refuge and a dawn push to the top. The 3-day Toubkal trek adds an acclimatisation night for a higher summit success rate and is our recommended format for most walkers.

Both Toubkal treks depart from Marrakech with private transfer to Imlil, a Berber guide, refuge accommodation, all meals and mule support. Winter ascents (November–April) require crampons and ice axe and are run as equipped mountaineering expeditions.

Compare the two formats side by side on our Toubkal 2-day vs 3-day comparison page, or browse all Mount Toubkal treks on the Toubkal hub.

Multi-Day Atlas Mountains Treks

Beyond Toubkal, the Atlas Mountains hold Morocco's finest multi-day trekking. The Azzaden Valley & Toubkal Circuit (4 days) combines a dramatic canyon approach with the summit — the most rewarding single itinerary in the Atlas. The Azzaden Valley 3-day trek traverses a remote gorge of ancient granaries between Ouirgane and Imlil.

The Aït Bouguemez Happy Valley trek (3 days) enters one of Morocco's most beautiful and least-visited valley systems — culturally rich and physically accessible. The Mgoun Traverse (6 days) is Morocco's benchmark wilderness route: the second-highest summit, high plateaux and red river gorges you wade through.

The Jebel Siroua trek (5 days) is a underrated volcanic cone of lava fields, rose gardens and saffron villages, entirely off the tourist trail. All include guesthouse or camp accommodation, full board and mule support.

Sahara & Desert Trekking Tours

For a completely different trekking experience, the Sahara desert tours cross the great dune fields of southern Morocco. The Erg Chigaga expedition (3 days) reaches genuine deep-desert sand seas near the Algerian border, with camel caravans and a night under the darkest skies in Morocco.

The Merzouga desert luxury trek crosses the High Atlas, visits Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra gorges, then rides a camel caravan into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes for a night in a luxury en-suite desert camp.

Desert trekking is best from October to April. Summer temperatures in the Sahara reach 50 °C and are not suitable for extended walking. Nights are cold year-round — pack layers.

Winter Trekking in Morocco

When the High Atlas holds deep snow (November–April), Toubkal becomes a winter mountaineering objective requiring crampons and ice axe — we run equipped winter summit expeditions. For snow-free winter trekking, the Jebel Saghro is the warm alternative: a volcanic massif in the rain shadow, crossed by Aït Atta nomads and almost no other trekkers.

The Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, Draa Valley and Tafraoute Anti-Atlas treks are also excellent winter objectives — lower, warmer and dramatic without the high-altitude commitment. Winter is genuinely one of the best seasons for trekking in southern Morocco.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times for trekking in the Atlas Mountains, with ideal temperatures and clear trails. Sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, a three-season sleeping bag (four-season for winter and high camps), a 25–35 litre daypack, sun protection, a headlamp and a reusable water bottle.
