When to Trek Morocco: A Season-by-Season Guide

When to Trek Morocco: A Season-by-Season Guide

Morocco offers world-class walking in every season, but the right month depends entirely on where you are going and what you want to feel. The mountains and the desert follow opposite calendars. This guide helps you choose the perfect window for your trek.

Spring (March to May): the finest all-rounder

The classic season. Valleys fill with almond and cherry blossom, rivers run high with snowmelt, and daytime temperatures are ideal for walking. High passes clear of snow through May. This is the best time for the Ourika Valley, Imlil village walks and the first Toubkal ascents of the year.

Summer (June to September): high mountains and cool nights

When the plains and Marrakech swelter, the high Atlas stays pleasant. This is prime season for multi-day expeditions like the Mgoun Traverse, when the highest passes are reliably snow-free. Avoid the Sahara and Agafay in high summer — desert heat is intense.

Autumn (October to November): golden light and quiet trails

Arguably the loveliest season: stable weather, warm days, cool nights and far fewer trekkers. Harvest time in the villages, saffron season around Siroua, and perfect conditions for both mountain treks and the return of desert journeys to Merzouga.

Winter (December to February): snow and solitude

The high peaks turn alpine. Toubkal becomes a genuine winter-mountaineering objective requiring crampons and an ice axe. Lower valleys and the desert are cool and clear — this is the best season for the Sahara, Agafay camps and gentle foothill walks under crisp blue skies.
