The best places to trek in Morocco are the Toubkal region (the classic 4,000 m summit), the M'Goun massif (wild high-altitude traverses), Siroua (volcanic solitude), Saghro (desert-rock drama) and Aït Bougmez (green culture-rich valleys).
Morocco's trekking regions each have a distinct character — from the busy, iconic Toubkal massif to the near-empty volcanic plateaus of Siroua. This guide compares the best regions by the kind of trek they offer, how hard they are, how remote, and what logistics they require.
| Region | Max altitude | Difficulty | Remoteness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toubkal | 4,167 m | Moderate–Hard | Moderate |
| M'Goun | 4,068 m | Hard | Remote |
| Siroua | 3,304 m | Moderate | Remote |
| Saghro | 2,700 m | Moderate–Hard | Very remote |
| Aït Bougmez | 3,000 m | Moderate | Moderate |
| Azzaden | 4,167 m | Hard | Remote |
Toubkal is the easiest to organise — short transfers, refuge accommodation, frequent departures. M'Goun, Siroua and Saghro need 1–2 weeks' notice for guide, cook and mule logistics and involve longer transfers (3–5 hr from Marrakech). Aït Bougmez needs 1 week's notice. All are fully guided and supported; you carry only a daypack.
Toubkal: May–October (winter possible with crampons). M'Goun: May–October. Siroua: April–October. Saghro: October–April (too hot in summer). Aït Bougmez: May–October. High passes in all regions may hold snow into May.
The Toubkal region (3-day format) and Aït Bougmez are the best for first multi-day treks — moderate difficulty, good infrastructure and rewarding without being extreme.
All are dramatic in different ways — Toubkal for the iconic summit, M'Goun for wild high-altitude plateaus, Saghro for desert-rock towers, and Aït Bougmez for green culture-rich valleys.
Siroua and Saghro are the quietest — you will rarely meet another group. M'Goun is also very quiet. Toubkal is the busiest, especially in peak season.
Private transfer from Marrakech is included on every trek. Toubkal is 1.5 hr; M'Goun, Siroua and Saghro are 3–5 hr with transfer days built into the itinerary.
Moderate (Aït Bougmez, Siroua) to hard (Toubkal, M'Goun, Azzaden, Saghro). All need good fitness; the 4,000 m regions add acclimatisation considerations.
Toubkal 2–4 days, Azzaden 3–4 days, Siroua 4–5 days, M'Goun 5–6 days, Saghro 5–7 days, Aït Bougmez 5 days.
From €245 (Toubkal 2-day) to around €550 (week-long Saghro). Cost scales mainly with days. See the cost guide for a full breakdown.
Most regions: May–October. Saghro is best October–April (too hot in summer). Winter Toubkal is possible with crampons. See the seasonal guide.
