Hiking in Morocco ranges from easy 3–5 hour valley walks with under 400 m of gain to hard 7–10 hour summit days with 1,000 m+ of gain. Match the route to your fitness and you will have a great day.
Difficulty is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that Morocco has hikes at every level — from a gentle stroll through walnut groves to a 4,167 m summit push. This guide explains our rating system, what each level demands, and which real routes fit each category so you can choose with confidence.
A simple test: can you walk briskly uphill for 45–60 minutes without needing to stop more than briefly? If yes, you are ready for moderate hikes. For hard hikes, you should be comfortable walking 3–4 hours uphill with a daypack. If in doubt, start with an easier route and build up — every tour page lists its level, and our guides adjust pacing to the group.
The Imlil Valley Loop — a gentle 4–5 hour walk through Berber villages and walnut groves with under 400 m of elevation gain. Perfect for beginners and families.
The winter Toubkal ascent and the M'Goun Traverse are the hardest — high altitude, sustained effort and (in winter) snow and ice requiring crampons. The 2-day Toubkal is the hardest short trek.
If you can walk briskly uphill for 45–60 minutes without stopping often, you are ready for moderate hikes. For hard hikes, be comfortable walking 3–4 hours uphill with a daypack. When in doubt, start easier.
Easy hikes: up to 400 m. Moderate: 400–800 m. Hard: 800–1,200 m. Expert multi-day: 1,200 m+. Every tour page lists its elevation profile.
Easy: 3–5 hours. Moderate: 5–7 hours. Hard: 7–10 hours. Multi-day treks are 5–8 hours per day over 2–7 days.
Day hikes range 1,500–2,600 m. Toubkal reaches 4,167 m. Above 3,000 m, altitude-sickness awareness matters; our guides monitor and pace accordingly.
For easy hikes, no. For moderate, regular walking helps. For hard hikes and summits, build cardiovascular fitness and do some hill-walking in the weeks before. See the training guide.
