Everything to know about hiking to the Setti Fatma waterfalls in Ourika Valley — routes, villages, best season, fitness and booking information.
Just 40 minutes south of Marrakech, the Ourika Valley follows a fast-running river up through terraced gardens, walnut groves and a string of Berber villages to the seven cascades of Setti Fatma — one of the most popular and rewarding half-day escapes from the city.
From the village of Setti Fatma, a rocky trail climbs alongside the gorge, crossing footbridges and passing riverside cafes, to the first and most accessible waterfall in around 40 minutes. Confident walkers can continue further up the scramble to reach the higher, quieter falls beyond.
The road up the valley passes a succession of small settlements where saffron, walnuts and vegetables are grown on narrow terraces. It is an easy way to see working Berber agricultural life without the remoteness of a multi-day trek.
Spring (April–June) brings the fullest waterfalls from snowmelt; autumn (September–October) offers clear skies and comfortable trekking temperatures; midsummer is warm but the river and shaded gorge stay cool; winter can bring higher water levels and slippery rock, so sturdy footwear matters year-round.
The valley floor walk suits all fitness levels; the scramble up to the falls involves uneven wet rock and moderate steps, comfortable for anyone with reasonable balance and no fear of heights near the gorge edge.
Midday sun creates the brightest spray-lit shots at the lower falls; a polarising filter cuts glare on the wet rock; and the terraced villages lower in the valley photograph best in the soft light of early morning.
Our Ourika Valley hike includes private transfers, a local guide and a home-cooked lunch, and pairs naturally with a visit to the Ouzoud or Ouirgane areas for travellers wanting a fuller Atlas day.
