Best Day Hikes from Marrakech: Ourika Valley, Imlil and the Kik Plateau

Three of the best day hikes from Marrakech — the Ourika Valley waterfalls, the Berber villages of Imlil and the open panoramas of the Kik Plateau. Difficulty, elevation, best season and booking.

Three valleys, three characters

Marrakech is one of the few major cities where you can be on a genuine mountain trail in under an hour. Three High Atlas valleys offer accessible, rewarding day hikes, each with a distinct character: the Ourika Valley and its waterfalls, Imlil and its Berber villages beneath Toubkal, and the Kik Plateau with its open panoramas.

This guide compares the three so you can choose the one that fits your fitness, your interests and the season. All are private hikes with a local Berber guide, a cooked lunch and a private transfer from Marrakech.

Ourika Valley: rivers and waterfalls

About an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley follows a fast river up through terraced gardens, walnut groves and a string of Berber villages to the seven cascades of Setti Fatma. It is the gentlest introduction to the Atlas and the most popular family day trip from Marrakech.

From Setti Fatma, a rocky trail climbs alongside the gorge to the first waterfall in around 40 minutes. Confident walkers can continue up the scramble to the higher, quieter falls. The valley suits every fitness level and offers shade and cool water all day.

Imlil: Berber villages beneath Toubkal

Imlil, at 1,740 m and about 90 minutes from Marrakech, is the gateway village to Mount Toubkal. A gentle loop through the neighbouring village of Aroumd and along the Mizane river suits any fitness level in half a day. Longer trails climb to the Tizi n’Tamatert pass or the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch.

Imlil offers the most authentic Berber culture of the three: cultivated terraces, communal irrigation channels, mud-brick houses and the warm welcome of mint tea. It is the ideal choice for combining an easy walk with a genuine encounter with Amazigh village life.

Kik Plateau: open panoramas

The Kik Plateau is a high tableland above Asni, about 90 minutes from Marrakech. Its ridge trails offer open panoramas across the entire Toubkal massif and cross traditional Berber villages far from the crowds of the main valleys.

It is the wildest of the three, with more open and rocky terrain. It suits active walkers who want a real sense of mountain and clear views without the commitment of a 4,000 m summit.

How to choose the right hike

For families with children or first-time walkers, Ourika and the Imlil loop are the gentlest, with shade, water and frequent stops. For Berber cultural immersion, Imlil is the best choice. For open panoramas and more solitude, the Kik Plateau is ideal.

Describe your group — ages, experience, the season and what you enjoy — to a local guide for an honest recommendation. A request is not a confirmed booking: availability and final details are confirmed in writing.
