Hiking from Oujda

Hiking from Oujda

From the Eastern Gate

Oujda, Morocco's easternmost major city, sits near the Algerian border and is the gateway to the country's least-visited hiking region: the Beni Snassen mountains, the Figuig oasis, and the eastern pre-Saharan plateaus. This is genuinely off-the-beaten-path Morocco — arid, dramatic and almost empty of tourists. For walkers who have already seen the Atlas and the Sahara, the east offers a completely different landscape and culture.

The Beni Snassen massif, 50 km south of Oujda, is a limestone range rising to 1,500 m with gorges, the famous Zegzel Gorge and the Grotte du Chameau caves. Further south, the Figuig oasis — a cluster of seven ksour against the Algerian border — is one of Morocco's most remote and atmospheric palm oases, reached by a long drive across the eastern desert. The Tafilalt region around Erfoud and Rissani, further west, links to the Sahara dunes.

Marrakech Outdoor Hikes focuses on central and southern Morocco, but this guide maps hiking from Oujda fully so eastern-based travellers can plan, and we can design private eastern itineraries on request.

Best Hikes from Oujda

The Zegzel Gorge and Grotte du Chameau walk (50 km south of Oujda) follows a limestone gorge with caves and prehistoric paintings to the Grotte du Chameau. A half-day, easy–moderate walk through the Beni Snassen massif.

The Beni Snassen massif traverse is a 2-day walk across the limestone range, sleeping in a village gîte, with gorges, caves and views across the eastern plain. Moderate; best in spring and autumn.

The Figuig oasis walk (a long day trip or overnight from Oujda) explores the seven ksour of Figuig and the surrounding palmery — one of Morocco's most remote and traditional oases, against the Algerian border.

The Tafilalt and the Sahara

Further west, the Tafilalt region around Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga is the gateway to the Erg Chebbi Sahara dunes. From Oujda this is a long 6–7 hour drive, but it links eastern Morocco to the classic Sahara experience. Marrakech Outdoor Hikes runs Merzouga desert treks from Marrakech; from Oujda, a private transfer to Merzouga can be arranged.
