Mount Toubkal 2-Day Hike: Complete Guide

Mount Toubkal 2-Day Hike: Complete Guide

The 2-day Mount Toubkal hike is Morocco's most popular multi-day trek and the shortest honest route to the 4,167 m roof of North Africa. In a single weekend from Marrakech you can stand on the highest summit in the Arab world, watching the sun rise over the Atlas to the haze of the Sahara. It is demanding but achievable for fit hillwalkers, and no technical climbing is needed in the snow-free season. This complete guide covers the difficulty, fitness and altitude demands, the day-by-day itinerary, the best season, what to pack, the cost, and how to decide between the 2-day and 3-day formats.

The 2-day Toubkal itinerary, day by day

Day 1 begins with a 6:00 AM private transfer from Marrakech to Imlil (1,740 m), a 65 km drive of about 1.5 hours. You meet your guide over mint tea, then walk 2–3 hours (3 km, +500 m) up the Mizane valley through walnut orchards and the Berber village of Aroumd, past the whitewashed shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m. Afternoon rest for acclimatisation; dinner and early night. Day 2: wake at 4:30 AM, hot breakfast, then a pre-dawn climb of 3–4 hours up the south cwm and steep scree to the Toubkal Saddle (3,800 m) and on to the 4,167 m summit for sunrise. After 30 minutes on top, descend to the refuge, then continue down to Imlil and transfer back to Marrakech by midday.

How difficult is the 2-day Toubkal hike?

The 2-day Toubkal hike is graded Challenging. There is no technical climbing in the snow-free season (May–October) — the route follows mountain paths and scree — but it is a demanding high-altitude route. The summit day is 7–8 hours of walking with nearly 1,000 m of ascent and the same of descent, all at altitude above 3,200 m. The first day is a gentle acclimatisation walk. The challenge is altitude and the long summit day, not terrain. Fit hillwalkers comfortable with a 10+ km mountain day manage it well; complete beginners should choose the 3-day acclimatised format instead.

Fitness and training for the 2-day Toubkal hike

You need good aerobic fitness. Train for 4–6 weeks beforehand with long hill or stair walks (10+ km) carrying a daypack, plus regular cardio (running, cycling, swimming). You cannot pre-acclimatise at home, but strong fitness makes the altitude far more manageable and the summit day enjoyable rather than a struggle. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the descent — they save your knees on the long scree. You carry only a daypack; mules carry group kit to the refuge.

Altitude and acclimatisation on Toubkal

The refuge sits at 3,207 m and the summit at 4,167 m, where the air holds roughly 40% less oxygen than at sea level. Altitude is the main reason people fail to summit. The 2-day format gives limited acclimatisation — you climb from 466 m to 3,207 m on day 1 and attempt the summit on day 2. To maximise success: hydrate constantly from Marrakech, ascend slowly, eat well even when appetite fades, avoid alcohol, and tell your guide immediately about any headache or nausea. If you live at sea level or are unsure of your altitude tolerance, the 3-day format — with an extra acclimatisation night — has a markedly higher summit success rate.

Best season for the 2-day Toubkal hike

The snow-free trekking season runs May to October, with spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) the most comfortable — mild days, clear mornings and stable weather. Summer (July–August) is feasible with a pre-dawn summit start to beat the heat. From November to April Toubkal becomes a winter mountaineering objective: snow, ice and cold require crampons, an ice axe and winter skills, and we run it only as the guided Toubkal Winter Ascent. Book spring and autumn departures well ahead — refuge space is limited.

What to pack for the 2-day Toubkal hike

Broken-in hiking boots with ankle support (non-negotiable on scree), moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece, a warm down jacket for the pre-dawn summit (cold even in summer), a waterproof shell, trekking trousers, a headtorch with spare batteries for the pre-dawn start, 2 L water, sun hat, gloves, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, blister plasters, a sleeping bag liner (the refuge provides blankets), and personal snacks. Trekking poles are strongly recommended. A full packing list is on the tour page.

Cost, what is included and how to book

The 2-day Mount Toubkal trek costs from €245 per person (trek price) plus a €60 Marrakech transfer — €305 total — including a certified English-speaking guide, two nights at the Toubkal Refuge, all meals on trek, mule support for group luggage, private Marrakech transfer and first aid. Excluded: personal gear, travel insurance (required, covering trekking to 4,200 m), drinks at the refuge, day-3 lunch and tips. Book online with a deposit or full payment, or message a guide on WhatsApp to arrange a private departure on your own dates. We reply quickly.

2-day vs 3-day Toubkal: which should you choose?

Choose the 2-day trek if you are a fit hillwalker short on time and confident about altitude. Choose the 3-day trek if you live at sea level, want a higher summit success rate, prefer a more relaxed pace, or are unsure of your altitude tolerance — the extra acclimatisation night at the refuge makes a real difference. Both are graded Challenging and need no technical climbing in summer. Compare the two formats side by side on our Toubkal 2-day vs 3-day comparison page.
