You do not need to be an athlete to enjoy the Atlas, but the fitter you are, the more you will savour it. Good preparation turns a demanding summit into a rewarding one. Here is how to build the strength and stamina your trek deserves.
Match your training to your trek. A day hike in Imlil needs general good health; a Toubkal summit or the Mgoun Traverse demands sustained cardiovascular fitness and legs conditioned for long descents. Be honest about your starting point and build gradually.
Three to four sessions a week: brisk walks, cycling or swimming for cardio, plus bodyweight strength (squats, lunges, step-ups, calf raises, core work). Start weekend walks of two to three hours on undulating ground.
Introduce longer hill walks carrying a loaded daypack (6 to 8 kg). Seek out stairs, hills and descents — downhill walking uses different muscles and is where the unprepared suffer most. Aim for a five to six hour hike by week seven.
Taper down. Rest, hydrate, sleep well and let your body recover so you arrive strong. Double-check your boots are broken in and your kit is complete.
